Balon Greyjoy: Not with the Drowned God Yet

Note:  This post will contain some season 4 spoilers for episodes 1-3.  If you don’t want spoilers, stop reading now. 🙂

"Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands and Invader of the North..." Aw, Ramsay didn't put "Dear" in front of it.

“Hey!  It’s says here that I’m still alive.”

Episode 3 has aired and, as far as we know, Balon Greyjoy is still alive despite Melisandre’s stupid leech magic.  Robb Stark and  Joffrey Baratheon haven’t been quite as lucky, so Balon is doing pretty good.  Fingers crossed his luck holds!

In S04E02, The Lion and the Rose, he gets a name check from Roose Bolton who chastises his illegitimate son Ramsay for maiming Theon Greyjoy.  Roose realizes that this means Balon won’t be willing to return lands he has seized, such as Moat Cailin, in return for a maimed and psychologically broken son.  Roose’s theory has been already proven correct with Balon’s surprise appearance in Mhysa.

I’m sure we’ll see more of this storyline, but whether it will involve Balon or Yara on her own, I have no idea.

Balon is also referenced in the War of the Five Kings, a skit devised by Joffrey at his wedding feast.  A troupe of performing dwarves re-enact the war…albeit with some cruel comic twists that only Joffrey appreciates.  Balon comes off pretty lightly, actually.  Riding a kraken, he easily has the coolest mount and I like his war hammer.  🙂

While it was nice to see him referenced, I hope Patrick Malahide himself actually makes an appearance this season.
